Increasing your storage

March 17th, 2009

When we first purchased our digital camera about two years ago the memory that was available was fairly limited. We had purchased upgraded compact flash memory card that held 256 Mb of data or about 200 low resolution pics. I noticed that recently you can find compact flash cards that have up to 16 GB of capacity that is simply amazing. The design of todays digital cameras come standard with about 256 MB but at the current resolution of 10 MB you can use up your memory very quick.  We have since upgraded our camera memory and this has been a great investment since we can store more photos and makes traveling on longer vacations much nicer so that you can store more photos until you get back home.

Protecting your home

March 13th, 2009

For most home owners protecting their home and family is their number one priority. I have gotten those calls or the door-to-door salespeople offering to install a home security system for free if we agree to sign up for their monitoring system for a minimum of 2 years. While it sounds appealing at first once you look a little deeper and understand what you are getting it can be very costly. That is why you may want to consider looking at installing your own wireless security system that you have full control over and the cost is less than what you might pay for one year of service. The statistics show that intruders are less likely to enter a home if they will be noticed and set off a loud alarm. This is where your own system can deter those unwanted guests by having an alarm sound before they even get a chance to break the glass or try the door. You can set up the system as you need and it can grow with you as your needs grow.

Design your own future

With all the uncertainty in the job market many working professionals are looking to go back to school to exapnd their knowledge and skill sets. People are finding that the markets are changing and what you are good at today may not be in demand tomorrow. The one area that will continue to grow is in the IT and computer field. More importantly are project managers who can help companies manage and implement new technologies by leading teams of diverse backgrounds to accomplish a common goal. This has increased the demand for online degree programs to offer the ability to obtain your Project Management certificate while being able to maintain your current position. At Saint Josephs University they offer project management certification programs for the busy individual to obtain their certificates. Having additional management training and experience can only help you in tough times like what we are experiencing.

Latest iPods for Christmas

December 20th, 2008

As we get ready for Christmas my kids have been asking for the latest ipods that are available. As I look around the house I notice that have the nano and shuffle but they now want the ones with better video capability so that they can watch some of their favorite shows. We did some research and found that there are hundreds of places to purchase the latest iPods but purchasing from a trusted source like buy.com is probably where we will shop. Plus they have enlisted Howie Mandel as their spokesperson and this has added some life to their overall brand.

Better memory

November 24th, 2008

Flash memory is also much more reliable than a hard drive since their are no moving parts and it is made of state of the art circuitry. Even the new Mac Airbook is using flash memory as a way to store data instead of a standard hard drive. As more devices start to use flash memory the capacity will grow and become much more economical. The use of Flash memory gives developers a much more reliable source to build upon and therefore being able to enhance their products.

Recycle your CDs and DVDs for stuff

November 23rd, 2008

This past week we have been cleaning out our basement to make room for our remodel and found that we have a bunch of toys, books, used cds that we were trying to figure out what to do with these items. Many of the CD’s are still in great shape in their original packaging so you hate to just throw them out and not sure if taking the time to list them on auction sites like ebay could take a lot of time. So this is where my blogging comes in handy as we were given the opportunity to learn about a site called Abundatrade.com. The company is set up to take in used CDs, DVDs, and books and then they give you points for your items for which you can use to purchase new TVs, iPods, cameras, and much more. Now you would think that the points are setup so that you would have to convert thousands of items to get an item of your choice. Not so. In most cases if the items are in good condition and in the original packaging you can probably get one point per item and depending on the market value slightly more.

They make it very easy to submit your items through their online tool that allows you to enter the UPC/ISBN numbers and then you can see the value that could receive and then it will create a file that you email for consideration. If you have a lot of items you can request a bar code scanner that plugs into your USB port and as long as you return it within 30 days you will not be charged for the device. I know that we are going to try it out and see what items that we have laying around that may still be worth something. They make it so easy to recycle your items with easy to follow directions that you simply cannot go wrong. So this holiday season why not recycle some of those books, CDs and DVDs lying around at Abundatrade.com and find that 32″ LCD TV that you or a loved one wants for Christmas.

An online company that has helped to bridge gap from information gathering to making the purchase is buy.com. There you can research electronics like the samsung 50 inch LCD find the latest information and then find a multitude of brands to make the purchase. The site makes it easy to navigate and make your selections for comparison shopping. So this year use the internet to your advantage and price compare and use this knowledge when you enter the store to make your purchase. Odds are that you will be informed than the clerk helping you out and you may actually teach them something.

upgrading your technology

September 26th, 2008

Consumers now have some great new tools to enhance their audio and visual equipment. For years there has been a push to make your PC the central media solution to play your music, control your TV and enhance your video. For some the media centers can be quite expensive and the house may not be wired correctly to accept CAT 5 wiring. With the availability of used cisco routers and switches people are now able to network their homes with their High Definition electronics. The wireless age has helped to break down some of these barrier and now there are some new products coming onto the market that combine the sophistication of high end sound while using your existing electrical wiring already found in your walls.

Designing your own sign

September 17th, 2008

We all have photos that we have taken and never taken the chance to get them printed so they just reside on a hard drive for no one to see. What if you could take your kids baseball picture of him sliding into home plate and put that on canvas? The creation of photo art is now within the grasp of most of us novice camera owners. Now you can go online and easily upload your photos and get a preview before having to make any purchases. These photos and images can even be used for digital signage that is used for businesses.

Photographers, from pros to point & shoot alike, can now artistically enhance their digital pics and traditional photos into stylized photo art masterpieces on professionally stretched canvas using dozens of easy-to-create artistic designs, finishes and collage templates, online at www.blackbox.com

How secure are your photos

August 19th, 2008

In the news there was a story this week about a woman suing BestBuy over the loss of her data and pictures on her laptop that she brought in for service. The case is one that has gained national attention on just how safe your precious files and pictures are when you take your PC or laptop into a reputable shop and they wipe out all your memories. Even over secured networks using CAT5e cable there are still chances of data loss. The home PC and laptop are becoming as common as the TV and people use their home computers for surfing the internet, doing their taxes, and storing valuable documents and pictures. It always makes me worry since all we take are digital pictures and we store them on our PC. I do try and backup often, but in the event of a bad virus or malicious spyware that could take out years of memories.

The new memory

July 16th, 2008

There are more devices and computers that are using flash memory instead of a hard drive to store info. The reason is that the devices are becoming smaller and the need to conserve space has become a premium.More and more cameras are using Flash memory as it becomes less volatile to drops and power disruptions.
